1. Orinoco

This chain of modern taquerias brings the traditional style of white tiles, brash signage, and plastic folding chairs. Most importantly, it hails from Northern Mexico, known for its carne asada.

Orinoco’s menu is short and sweet with just three types of meat: al pastor, bistec, and chicharron. But this short list offers several different takes. Everything can be ordered on corn or flour tortillas – and even cloaked with cheese. Furthermore, the salsas are bright, zesty, and spicy, and you can also order a few specialty items like “gringas” and “piratas.”

2. Blanco Colima

A lounge-meets-restaurant housed in a historic mansion. Blanco Colima is a great spot to grab a small bite and a cold beverage as you watch people and pushcarts go by.

In short, the menu is a fusion of Spanish cuisine with Mexican accents and is widely known for its signature cocktails. Additionally, you can visit the restaurants for three different experiences – a morning coffee, a mid-afternoon seafood dish, and a music and mixology dinner after dark.

3. Por Siempre Vegana

Mexico City might just be the world capital of tacos, including vegan options. Por Siempre Vegana started as a small food truck and has become a popular dine-in spot full of meat-free options

90% of their menu consists of tacos, and they’ve certainly become experts in their field. Although lines are not uncommon, their taco de milanesa is definitely worth the wait. Make sure to take advantage of the toppings too!

4. Contramar

Contramar is perfect for a casual fish feast and Palomas. The dining room is often busy with locals and tourists alike, looking to try Gabriela Cámara’s creative vision.

This place has become legendary for its seafood-focused menu, and you should absolutely make a point to try the tuna tostadas and fish covered in red and green sauce.

The lively, busy restaurant is at its best during lunch hours when the sprawling dining room becomes an all-out party. So in conclusion, if this is your first time in the city, a meal at Contramar is essential.

5. Rosetta

Rosetta is one of the most romantic spots in CDMX. Chef Elena Reygadas’ townhouse restaurant feels just like an Italian Villa.

This is one of our favorite date spots in the city. Known for its homemade pasta, we advise you to stop by in the early lunch hours – for a better chance at a table without much wait. Above all, you must stop in Elena’s bakery after your meal for her exquisite artisanal pastries – we recommend the guava pastry, the cardamom bun, and the chocolate-vanilla concha.

6. Expendio de Maíz

When Expendio had just opened, they went through about 400 kilos of nixtamalized corn every month. Now, it’s more than 10,000.

A rustic establishment with just a few tables and an open kitchen, Expendio de Maíz sin Nombre is a delicious experiment — known by some as an anti-restaurant. The space evolved from Jesús Tornés’ market stand to a pretty informal diner. As of today, there is no established menu. Instead, the chefs make what they want from their seasonal ingredient choice. That being said, it’s all regional dishes – banana moles and bean quesadillas one day; hoja santa tacos the next.

7. Páramo

Here you can enjoy what’s basically a cantina afterdark for the younger crowd. In other words, its got great drinks, food, and music – way chiller than other late spots around Mexico City.

Páramo offers a wide taco menu, signature drinks, retro music and board games in a late-night restaurant. Is the semi-hidden gem of the city’s nightlife. Our tip: be sure to try La muñeca, a pork Chamorro confit taco flavored with tender, hot carnitas.

8. Nueve Nueve

Nueve Nueve is a Mexican Bistro located inside the legendary Casa Lamm, a beautifully designed cultural center.

The kitchen is in charge of Chef Mónica Beteta, who designed contemporary dishes based on different regions of the country. We recommend the fried Camembert in red fruit sauce and the shrimps in tamarind sauce.

Most importantly, take advantage of your visit and stop by its private lounge bar, where you can relax in its comfortable armchairs and dim lighting.

9. Umai

A restaurant of traditional Japanese food, mixology and relaxed atmosphere. Umai is famously known for its interior design and unique structure. That is to say, the restaurant is divided in different experiences depending on each area.

There’s a sushi bar in the first part, where chefs filet fish from Japan, Spain, New Zealand, and Baja California. Then there is the terrace, simple and open so that you can see the final section – the Zen garden (the crowd’s favorite).

From their fresh ingredients, we highlight the bluefin tuna (chu-toro / toro / akami), king salmon, Japanese sea urchin (uni), and salmon roe (ikura).

10. Huset

Huset, which is Swedish for house, labels its food as country cooking

Most of its menu is actually cooked over a wood-burning fire. And the majority of their ingredients are sourced from local farmers and producers, or even brought in from their own garden. Their dishes are certainly locally inspired. But the cooking draws inspiration from French and Italian techniques.
