Before your trip: what do you need to travel to Mexico?

Great news: Mexican borders are open. Americans are allowed to travel to Mexico by air or land without restrictions.

As of January 2022, travelers are not required to show a negative COVID test to enter Mexico. They are also not obliged to quarantine after entering the country. Health and social distancing measures are encouraged.

Travel visas are not required for North American visitors. All tourists must complete an immigration form when entering and leaving the country. These forms are provided directly on flights or can be found online in advance on the National Institute of Immigration website.

Travelers will need to complete a health declaration form and present it to immigration upon arrival. Find this form at the international arrivals area at all Mexican airports. For an electronic version, travelers can create an account on the Vuela Seguro Mexico website 12 hours before their flight. You will receive a QR code to present to immigration once you land.

Once you arrive in Mexico

No applications are currently necessary for monitoring COVID-19 while in Mexico. Some cities, however, will encourage you to sign up for local exposure notifications to account for active cases.

Before traveling to Mexico, you must learn about the country’s COVID-19 Traffic Light Monitoring System.

Although many limitations have been lifted already, Mexico still follows a color-coded protocol. This system determines restrictions state-by-state. The four colors – green, yellow, orange, and red – indicate how high the active number of cases are in each state, as well as the social activities allowed.

Most states are now green and yellow, which means that social activities can be practiced with precaution.

Services and tourist attractions in Mexico

Most beaches, parks, and attractions are open in tourist destinations like Tulum, Los Cabos, and Playa del Carmen. Although Mexico does not have a federal mask mandate in place, most cities require masks in public spaces. They will also be required in shops, restaurants, and services.

Aside from mask use, there are many enhanced safety and hygiene protocols. Social distancing markers, temperature screenings, and hand sanitizing stations are all in place.

Many tourist attractions have resumed activities and are now open to welcome visitors. It is encouraged to pre-book your visit to museums, shows, and archeological sites, as social distancing rules limit the number of guests allowed.

Foodies traveling around Mexico should start booking their dinners in advance. Apps like OpenTable have increased in popularity across the country, and they can help you ensure a seat at that restaurant you’ve been dying to try.
